The beginning of last month has been a little bit creepy for us. Since Halloween happened this week, we decided to visit the Michigan Museum of Horror in Detroit to get started early.
Located at 44 South Monroe Street, near downtown Monroe. The museum opened on Thursday, October 20 at 6:30 p.m. and will be open every Thursday through Sunday from Noon to 8:00 p.m., making it the first year-round horror museum in Michigan.
Nate Thompson, a native of Monroe and director of various films, says this museum ought to be useful to all audiences. In addition to the more fun exhibits like horror movie-related art, you can also see a variety of more serious exhibits such as historic funeral items and skulls.
You never know what you'll come across at the museum - for example, violins from the 1800s made of cat guts. Tarot readings will also be available, as well as witch offering cleansing services to anyone who is afraid they may take bad energy with them
“All souls are welcome,” Thompson said. “I just hope people come out and have a good time. I’m doing this out of my love for horror and the ability to provide a unique experience and attraction to Monroe.”
There is one room off-limits to younger visitors. It might not be appropriate for kids, so think before bringing them in there.
“The 18 and over room. That’s called the Red Room,” added Thompson. “It’s set up as a serial killer’s photography developing station. It’s going to have Polaroid photos of real crime scene photos; real murders from the 1800s to present day as well as a map detailing where certain serial killings happened.”
Thompson says some of the items at the museum came from Michigan’s Anatomy of Death Museum in Mt. Clemens; other items came from anywhere and everywhere with local and non-local donations along with items from his personal collection.
